Instead of painting the eyes, I used beads of fondant, and I knew from a tutorial to make a divot in the face before inserting the bead. I also learned how to make a decent looking nose, I don't think I put a nose on the first cake.
What a difference a year makes! Check out the smooth finish on my sides. I always assumed the buttercream cakes in magazines were airbrushed. Now I know that practice and the right consistency icing are key. My cake top was actually perfect too until I wrote on it. My lettering started out too large, so I had to scrape it off and start over. I ended up ruining my perfect top, but no one other than me would ever notice it.
In the past year I have also learned how to take nicer pictures. I'm not a professional by any means, but I now take 10-15 pictures of every cake and choose the best instead of 2 or 3. I think it helps.
Guess what? I have purchased my domain name and built a website. It isn't up yet, but will be soon. I am pretty excited about it.
